Ultra Training Week 7: Frustration

While last weekend I was hopeful I was over the worst of the injury and on the mend, this week I seem to be back to square one. I probably pushed it too much on my 10 mile run last weekend, and should of skipped it or done something shorter, as now I find myself in a worse position than before.

On Monday I was a bit tight, I had a sports massage in the afternoon, which was brilliant and my legs felt instantly better. Unfortunately we had to get the coach back to London that evening and after 3 and a bit hours of sitting, when I went to get up I could hardly walk and was in severe pain again.

Tuesday/Wednesday were extremely frustrating, I rested it as much as possible, but the pain was bad, and seemed much worse than before. I was limping around, and by Wednesday evening the pain was even affecting me while lying down or sitting. Cue all round panic, Google diagnosis and tears.

After putting it off for a while I finally got an urgent GP’s appointment on Friday, she confirmed that it wasn’t DVT, which was a good thing, but other than that she didn’t know what the issue was and gave me a referral form for physio. I imagine this process will take a few weeks, so I am going to pay to see someone, hopefully this week, instead.

Saturday/Sunday there was a slight reduction in pain, especially when I was lying or sitting, it’s still niggling though and I can feel it isn’t right when I walk around or go up/down stairs. I’ve tried to stay off it as much as possible, but it’s unbelievably frustrating when the weather is so amazing, and you can’t even go for a walk without pain.

I think right now what I need is a diagnosis, and some sort of schedule or plan, for what I can be doing ie. stretching/foam rolling etc, hopefully if I can get an appointment sometime this week that will get the ball rolling. As for this week it’s been a right off, and it’s now been 3 weeks of pain, with little to no sign of any improvement after rest, which is frustrating and worrying. I’m trying to stay positive about it, but it’s super frustrating when you’ve done several 16,18, 20 mile training runs which are probably going to be for nothing if I am out for much longer.

Hopefully I’ll have some better news next week, just being able to walk without pain would be a good start.
